4th-5th April 2026 Branch Flute Making Workshop

Learn the humble craft of making sticks sing!

Join me in the forests of Dartington in South Devon for an intimate, 2 day in-depth workshop where you'll learn the whole process, from start to finish, of birthing your own branch flute using traditional hand tools. This workshop will be for 2 participants in total.

About the course;

DAY 1:
The first full day will be spent out in the 'Cedar Grove', a special location deep in the woodland set up with outdoor workbenches and a primitive shelter.

Upon arrival there will be an introduction followed by some Cacao to land us into our day in forest together. We shall then deepen into the lore of these magical instruments, hearing their story and song before diving into the creation of your very own flute.

PRACTICAL SKILLS YOU'LL LEARN:

☉ How to identify suitable flute-crafting material & how to season it correctly

☉ How to measure & safely split a branch with hand tools

☉ Carving knife techniques

☉ Carving skills with chisels to hollow out the flute chambers

☉ How to carve a beautiful & professional sounding sound mechanism
(the heart of these instruments!)

☉ Glueing & clamping methods

Bring your own lunch, water, a cup for Cacao, suitable waterproof/warm outdoor wear and a keen excitement to learn!

DAY 2:
The second day will be spent inside my little workshop temple just 10 minutes up the road from Dartington. Here we light up the wood-burner & unveil our hard work from the day before and hear our flutes for the first time! During the day I will take you through the magical process of shaping, tuning and adorning your instrument, turning that humble stick into a soulful expression of sound.

When we have finished and are happy with our flutes we will bond with our newly birthed sonic wands with a flute lesson from myself.

Again please bring your own lunch & water. I can provide teas + a warming cup of Cacao for those who want it.

PLEASE NOTE:
This in-depth course requires intermediate knowledge of woodworking with hand tools, knife/spoon carving skills. If you would like to learn the skills or simply freshen up prior to the workshop I can offer a 1 day course on the essential skills.
