2-Day Branch Flute Making Workshop 18th-19th Jan 2025
Learn the humble craft of making sticks sing!
Join me in South Devon for an intimate, 2 day in-depth workshop where you'll learn the whole process, from start to finish, of birthing your own branch flute using traditional hand tools. This workshop will be for 2 participants in total, there is one space currently available.
About the course;
DAY 1:
The first full day will be spent out in the 'Cedar Grove', a special location in Dartington deep in the woodland set up with outdoor workbenches and a primitive shelter.
Upon arrival there will be an introduction followed by a silent walk and sound bath to land us into our day in forest together. We shall then deepen into the lore of these magical instruments, hearing their story and song before diving into the creation of your very own flute.
PRACTICAL SKILLS YOU'LL LEARN:
☉ How to identify suitable flute-crafting material & how to season it correctly
☉ How to measure & safely split a branch with hand tools
☉ Carving knife techniques
☉ Carving skills with chisels to hollow out the flute chambers
☉ How to carve a beautiful & professional sounding sound mechanism
(the heart of these instruments!)
☉ Glueing & clamping methods
I will provide snacks and hot drinks plus a cup of yummy medicinal Cacao to fuel us for the day. Bring your own lunch, water, suitable outdoor wear and a keen excitement to learn!
DAY 2:
The second day will be spent inside a cosy and beautiful yurt space in the nearby town. Here we will unveil our hard work from the day before and hear our flutes for the first time! During the day I will take you through the magical process of shaping, tuning and adorning your instrument, turning that simple branch into a soulful expression of sound.
We will be joined later by a few others who have come to make a flute just for the 1 day workshop.
When we have finished and are happy with our flutes we will bond with our newly birthed sonic wands with a flute lesson from myself and also a shamanic meditation journey held by my parter Isla-Rose.
I will provide lunch and teas + a warming cup of Cacao for those who want it.
PLEASE NOTE:
This in-depth course requires intermediate knowledge of woodworking with hand tools, knife/spoon carving skills. If you would like to learn the skills or simply freshen up prior to the workshop I can offer a 1 day course on the essential skills.
